Gates Ventures – Living Portrait Wall

The Ask: concept, prototype, and deliver a bespoke portrait wall installation for the Gates Ventures headquarters celebrating employees and collaborators, while also delighting through a magical, generative data overlay highlighting unique facts and surprising interconnectedness within the group.

The Result: living on a 70” vertically-oriented architectural LCD, our team commissioned 120+ illustrated & mixed-media portraits of Gates Ventures employees and collaborators from five artists around the globe. These portraits were then brought to life as looping animations to create the base layer of this digital installation. On top of the animations, we added a generative text layer fed by a database of personal facts and data-points about the subjects (complete with CMS system for self-service updating). These facts were then combined and used to populate millions of unique sentence variations, creating an experience that felt fresh and surprising regardless of view-count.
